The topic "The role of new media in Nigeria elections" tries to look at the current wave of how conversations and decisions are influenced across the country via numerous social media channels. It also looks at the dangers of driving fake news as we have seen during both during the 2015 elections and the subsequent one held in 2019. The 2023 elections is scheduled to hold in a couple of months and we have also seen the wave of naming and conversations different fan groups have identified with over different mediums. With access to the internet for 109 million people across Nigeria, it goes to show the need for content moderation and also looks into how we can harness the possibilities of social media.

This session will look into the trends, the positives and the negative effect social media has on the Nigeria elections. At the end of this session, we would love participants to understand the power they wield in shaping conversations online towards the general elections and also how to be responsible citizens while engaging with fellow countrymen over different mediums.
